TMIT 57: We Run Our Family Like a Team. Does It Actually Work?

We talk a lot on TMIT about family as “the most important team we’ll ever build,” but what does that actually look like in practice? This week, we share our top five favorite ways to intentionally build our family team culture—and we brought in a very special guest to hold us accountable: our 8.75-year-old daughter, Hunter.

As the oldest Neufito, Hunter gives us real-time feedback on how our family team-building experiments are actually landing in our culture lab. We discuss how it's so easy to spend all our energy playing defense against bedtime battles and tantrums, but shifting our mindset to team leaders allows us to play offense and proactively build culture together.

In Episode 57, we break down the five practices we currently use to build our family team:

  • The Family Cheer: An acronym (NEUFELD) with hand signals that keeps us connected, and how we are upgrading it to reinforce our core values at family meetings.
  • Family Workouts: Why we all work out together every day at 7:15 AM, how removing the decision friction made it automatic for the kids, and why our only rule is that we cross the finish line together.
  • "Super Ding-Ding-Dings": Our version of a family tip jar that rewards going above and beyond without being asked (and funds our shared family splurges).
  • Running Laps (No-Blame Discipline): Why we stopped litigating "he said, she said" sibling arguments and started sending the kids out to the front yard to run laps together instead.
  • Micro-Rituals: The tiny, repeatable anchors—like grace before meals, Friday marshmallows, and the Word of the Day—that form our family's unique mosaic.

What practices or micro-rituals do you use to build team culture in your home? We're always looking for new experiments to try!
